There are three agencies investigating Trump’s ties to Russia. The Republicans only want investigations of who leaked information they are trying to cover up. For the Democrats it is about who colluded with the Russians when they influenced the election. No one is investigating the most important question. Has Trump been compromised by the Russians, and is he acting as an agent of Russia? Republicans say the entire idea is incredible and not worth considering. I think it is.
Christopher Steele, the respected ex MI-6 expert on Russia, said that Russia has “been cultivating, supporting, and assisting” Donald Trump for years but also had compromised the tycoon “sufficiently to be able to blackmail him.” After his dossier was released there were two F.S.B. agents that were dramatically arrested, and two other people assassinated who were suspected of leaking this information, Christopher Steel himself went into hiding to avoid the same fate. That adds credibility to his report.
Donald Trump has appointed 28 cabinet members or transition members who have ties to the Russians, and he acts as if he were an agent. He appointed former EXXON CEO Rex Tillerson to Secretary of State so he can reverse the sanctions freezing a $500 billion deal he made with the Russians to develop their oil, and he has done everything possible to accelerate Climate Change. Russia will benefit more than any other country from Global Warming and Siberia could become the next bread basket of the world. He still refuses to criticize Russia, while criticizing all of our allies, and embracing all of the world’s worst tyrants. He opposes NATO, the European Union, the free press, the scientific community, the intelligence community, and any checks and balances required by the Constitution. All of that lends credibility to the Steel Dossier.
Despite his denials, it appears that Trump has numerous financial tires to Russia. One son, Donald Jr. said in 2008 the Russian money was “pouring in” to the Trump business. In 2014 Another son Eric, explained how Trump was financing his golf courses, “Well, we don’t rely on American banks. We have all the funding we need out of Russia.” Deutsche bank which loaned Trump $300m, is being investigated for money laundering run by Russian criminals with ties to the Kremlin. A Russian billionaire paid Trump $95 million for some Florida property doubling his investment in a troubled real estate environment. All of that lends credence to Steel’s dossier.
The dossier claims that Trump was recorded with Russian prostitutes in 2013 when he was paid $12 million to conduct the Miss Universe Pageant in Moscow. The Access Hollywood tape of Trump indicates that this is the type of person Trump is. He said that women will let celebrities do anything. In Moscow there were plenty of women paid by the Russians to compromise Trump, that were willing to do anything Trump wanted. Even the CIA concluded that this was credible.
It is absolutely not credible that Michael T. Flynn, the person Trump would choose as his national security adviser, acted alone in speaking to the Russians, telling them that they didn’t have to worry about President Obama’s sanctions for influencing the elections. It is very likely that the US and several foreign nations recorded Flynn and many other Trump associates colluding with the Russians to fix the elections.
The final argument is that Trump acts as if he is guilty. He promised the highly respected New York prosecutor Preet Bharara that he could stay on as U.S. attorney for New York’s Southern District but then fired him when he got too close to Trump’s financial misdeeds. He fired Sally Yates after she warned Trump that Flynn was lying. He fired FBI director James Comey after he asked for more funds to expand the investigation. The day after he fired Comey, Trump met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Russian Ambassador Sergei Kislyak and they all laughed and made fun of the Comey firing. He has done everything he can to obstruct the investigation, and the Republicans have gone along with the obstruction.
The only way to restore respect for the office of the President is for Trump to come clean, release all of his tax records, and to recommend an independent prosecutor and head of the FBI with unimpeachable records like Preet Bharara and Merick Garland. To restore Constitutional checks and balances we need to return both houses of Congress to the Democrats so we can learn the truth.
