New ways to think about Education.

We are fortunate to have a lot of teachers at OLLI so this should be a fascinating discussion. I would like all of you to think about several things: What is education? Why is education necessary to have a functioning democracy? What role does the arts, music, physical education and vocational training have in education? How do we set up lifelong learning?  Here are a bunch of videos to watch to give you something to talk about.

  1. How is American education doing compared to other nations? How can we improve and what are the other nations doing right?
  2. What can we do to increase attendance and decrease bullying?                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    3. How do we teach more effectively? We know that things like music helps kids learn math, and we know hands-on activities enhance learning. We also know that rote memorization is one of the lowest forms of thinking. How can we teach the higher orders of thought like application and innovation? 3:52 min.

  1. Democracy depends upon an informed public. How can we educate the general public?
  2. In this country education is the best way to achieve gender equality. In third world countries education especially of girls and women is the best way to help the entire country and to solve many of the social problems like overpopulation, poverty, etc. As Greg Mortinson said: “Educate a boy, and you educate an individual. Educate a girl and you educate a community”
