How To Make America Great Again

America was greatest when the citizens worked together to defeat adversity. They united to throw off the tyranny of Royalty and the East India Corporation during the revolution. They came together to overcome the Great Depression, to triumph during WWII and to rebuild Europe afterwards. Tom Brokaw wrote, “the generation who grew up in the United States during the deprivation of the Great Depression, and then went on to fight in World War II, is I believe, the greatest generation any society has ever produced.

“Societies are judged by how we treat our weakest and most vulnerable. FDR’s New deal provided the “3 Rs. Relief, Recovery, and Reform: relief for the unemployed and poor, recovery of the economy to normal levels, and reform of the financial system to prevent a repeat depression. During the Great Depression the WPA and the CCC provided millions of jobs and made wonderful infrastructure improvements.

The Second New Deal created Social Security, which lifted one third of our seniors from poverty, and the Fair Labor Standards Act, which gave us the 40 hr. week and minimum wages. During WWII most manufacturing was converted for the war effort, and women showed that they could run the country without many men. America was great because we did great things. After the war we helped rebuild Europe with the Marshall Plan. We built the interstate highway system, and other massive infrastructure projects. We provided free college and cheap housing with the G.I. Bill, and we created the middle class. We created Medicare so our ailing seniors weren’t abandoned to die. All of this investment in America resulted in thirty years of prosperity, and it was all paid for by having a 90% top tax rate and by having corporations pay 40% of revenue.

There was little inequality then. We all grew together instead of apart.Compared to those times America is a moral disaster. We now have the worst inequality and the second worst child poverty of all developed nations. Jesus said to love everyone, to give away our wealth to help the poor, and that the rich had little chance of getting into heaven, yet Republicans attack the poor and throw money at the rich.

How can the richest nation in the world, which professes to be Christian, have lousy schools, poisoned drinking water, abusive cops and one fifth of its children living in poverty? Yet the racist and bigoted Republican presidential candidates want to make things worse by slashing all programs to help the poor, and their tax plans would be the largest redistribution to the rich in American history according to Robert Reich.

Republicans should be pleased with President Obama since their corporate sponsors are making record profits, and his trade deals will give corporations sovereignty over the government. We have the longest period of consecutive job growth in history. The unemployment has gone from 10.3 down to 4.9, the deficit has rapidly declined from $1.4 trillion in 2008 to $438 billion in 2015. Yet this good and kind president, without a hint of scandal or corruption, is hated, demonized, and denied the respect that should be given the office. He is given no credit for avoiding another depression, keeping us out of wars, or for resolving numerous crises.

Perhaps they hate him because he has been successful, despite total obstructionism and downright sabotage of the economy by the Republicans in Congress. The Affordable Care Act did keep price increases lower and did provide health care for an additional 13 million Americans. International diplomacy was successful in restoring the respect of the rest of the world, and in restoring relations with Cuba. The International community is taking more responsibility for controlling the terrorists, curtailing the nuclear ambitions of Iran, and defending themselves.

We can no longer afford to be the boss of the world and International diplomacy is the only alternative. The President has spent more on strengthening the border and has deported more illegal immigrants than any other president, yet that has not eased our anemic economy. It turns out that the undocumented commit half the crime and they outperform the rest in school and work. They improve the country as they always have.

Republicans believed the president’s policies would result in catastrophe, but by every metric other than inequality, our economy is doing great compared to the rest of the world. The vitriolic anger of conservatives is because their worldview has been proven false. Bush proved that the Republican’s cherished dogma of trickle down economics, spending cuts for social programs, tax breaks for the rich, and unilateral militarism was an unmitigated disaster. China’s pollution and climate change demonstrate the dangers of unfettered capitalism.

Yes America has problems but they were almost all caused by Republican policies. 95% of the recovery has gone to the 1% because of their tax policies, the good jobs have been outsourced due to trade policies. We do not have a spending problem, we have a revenue problem. Every school and every government agency which is supposed to help and protect the people has been starved of funds. The government has been turned into a pay to play corporatocrosy that only serves the rich and powerful, and not the will of the people.

Corporations became people and their ability to buy elections and bribe officials became protected as free speech. To make America great again we need to do exactly the opposite of what Republicans advocate.Republicans treat the rich like royalty and have allowed the corporations to take over the government, but that is the inverse of what our founders intended. They placed the Royalty clause in the Constitution to limit the influence of the rich, and they severely restricted all corporations which could only exist for a short time under a government charter.

We should bring people together in common cause instead of insulting and dividing everyone. As Jesus said, we should love everyone, especially those we consider our enemies. All Muslims are not our enemies. Drone strikes may take out many terrorist leaders but they also kill innocent people which recruits more terrorists. More humanitarian aid and building schools, hospitals, water, and sewer systems, would gain more hearts and minds, and would be far cheaper than the military.

Bernie Sanders agrees with King Abdullah of Jordan. Muslims must defeat the Islamic extremists. Almost all of the terrorists come are Sunni Wahhabists which is the official religion of Saudi Arabia. They are only ½% of Islam but has huge influence because oil money funds Madrassas and terrorists. If we just concentrate on defeating the Wahhabist terrorists, and befriend the other 99% of peaceful Muslims, they may get rid of their own extremists and let us know when the Jihadists are plotting something. Otherwise if we declare war on Islam as the terrorists want, we will have little cooperation or intelligence.

Climate Change is the greatest crisis facing the world, which will affect millions of lives in the future. To avoid disaster we need to unify everyone in the world to work together like Americans did during WWII. That is difficult because the Republican Congress is the only organization in the world that denies climate science. We need to invest in a massive transition to renewable energy and rebuild our crumbling infrastructure which will provide for tens of millions of jobs. We need to wean ourselves from our dependence on the dirty power sources of the past and invest in the clean renewable energy of the future.

We need to invest in the future by rebuilding schools in poor areas, and by encouraging the best educators with bonuses to teach in the ghettos and slums where they are needed the most. We need free college and health care for all, and it should be paid for by restoring fairness to the tax policies, so the rich and corporations pay their fair share again.

This will take a political revolution. To make America great again we need a new deal just like FDR’s that restores faith in the government and returns it to the people. The Republican solution to every economic crisis is to slash spending on social programs while giving tax breaks for the rich. Such austerity programs have been a disaster here and in Europe, and what the Republicans advocate is the exact opposite of what the people and the nation needs now.

The hatred and racism of Donald Trump divides the country instead of uniting it. Ostracizing minorities, immigrants, and Muslims like they did in Brussels, creates homegrown terrorists. Trump reminds the rest of the world of the greatest tyrants who killed millions, and that terrifies most nations. Even China said that Trump demonstrates the weakness of democracy. Tyrants like Hitler and Mussolini were also democratically elected.

The only nation that applauds Trump is Communist Russia. Their leader, Vladimir Putin who Bush considered a kindred soul, considers him brilliant. This is all about personal power, and the politics of exclusion. Trump only appeals to the darker sides of our nature.

America was greatest when the leaders were selfless and helped the powerless. The efforts of Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, were never about gaining personal power or political office. Their struggle is to form a political revolution, a movement to restore democracy to America as our founders intended. Their form of socialism is simply democratic governance.

Government should be of, by and for the people. It should be inclusive of minorities and protect all of us, especially the weakest, from the greed and avarice of the rich, the powerful, and the corporations.

To make America great again we must eliminate the economic and political tyranny, reverse the transfer of wealth and power to a chosen few, and return to the democracy our founders envisioned. Most of all we should change our government so it once again works for the people instead of only the affluent and international corporations.

One Response to How To Make America Great Again

  1. Sunny3 says:

Hi Al, The problem is that it isn’t America isn’t great any longer. Many of the people who have settled in this country have no idea or concept what it is about. I don’t think they realize they must work hard for everything and it is not given to them. Possibly they expected to have everything easy. That isn’t how it works.
